SAU Honors College

The SAU Honors College was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU. Dr. Lynne Belcher served as founding director and is retired from SAU. The Honors College seeks and admits qualified students who seek to pursue a serious academic program with equally gifted peers and committed teachers. Honors classes are small and provide academically enriching opportunities for students and the faculty who teach them. Currently, SAU enrolls nearly 170 honors students and graduates about 66% of admitees in four years or less. Anyone interested in applying to the Honors College or seeking further information should contact the director, Dr. Edward P. Kardas at epkardas@saumag.edu or at 870 904-8897.

Matney, Shelby: Bucket List

It is truly fascinating to think of the things this world has to offer.  Constantly changing and always advancing, it seems as though there is hardly time to experience most things.  It is because of this constant change that people create bucket lists.
1.     Make a patchwork quilt.
I want to do this primarily to share the hobby with my grandmother and be able to carry it on after her.
2.     Learn to saddle and ride a horse.
My grandfather has taught almost everyone in my family how to ride.  I’ve only ever ridden seated behind someone else.  So I have now made it a priority to learn to saddle and ride by myself with no assistance required.
3.     Go to an LSU vs. Arkansas football game.
In my family, LSU football is a lifestyle.  Every Thanksgiving we watch the rival teams square off.  Someday I would love to have the chance to actually be in the stadium.
4.     Go to an SEC championship football game.
I have no preference as to which teams play.  My goal is simply just to be there in person.
5.     Go on an Alaskan cruise.
I love being on a cruise ship heading toward a warm sandy beach watching the water fly by me.  I am very excited, though, to one day take the same trip in a totally different direction and see what that has to offer.
My list is a test of patience, mental and physical strength, and eventually will become a test of finances, I suppose.  I chose these things as my top five because I think these characteristics are rather essential for most other things, and I have yet to acquire them, such as patience.  I do believe it will all come in time if I properly prepare myself.  According to Robert Louis Stevenson, ”Everyone who got where he is has had to begin where he was.”
