SAU Honors College

The SAU Honors College was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU. Dr. Lynne Belcher served as founding director and is retired from SAU. The Honors College seeks and admits qualified students who seek to pursue a serious academic program with equally gifted peers and committed teachers. Honors classes are small and provide academically enriching opportunities for students and the faculty who teach them. Currently, SAU enrolls nearly 170 honors students and graduates about 66% of admitees in four years or less. Anyone interested in applying to the Honors College or seeking further information should contact the director, Dr. Edward P. Kardas at epkardas@saumag.edu or at 870 904-8897.

Fowler, Chelsea: Bucket List

I honestly never felt the need to construct a checklist of what I must at least attempt to achieve before I pass. I have always categorized “bucket lists” in a class similar to New Year’s Resolutions: many people create them, and few are actually accomplished. I don’t want my life to end filled with regrets, so in an effort to pursue that, I usually avoid these things. I expressed as much to my father the other day, but he showed me a new perspective: Bucket lists don’t have to be collections of what you believe you absolutely must accomplish; they’re just fun ideas to think about, filled with things you would like to possibly try.

But, I have managed to think up a few objectives I might like to reach if I ever get the opportunity. Two goals on my list are places I would enjoy visiting. I wish to travel to England at some point in the future. I find Europe fascinating in general, but if I had to pick a specific country to journey to, it’d be England. My other voyage-related aim is more specific; I want to visit the Ghibli Museum in Japan. I am a big fan of Studio Ghibli, and taking a tour through that museum would be a dream come true.

The rest of my list is more abstract. I hope that I will eventually get over my fears. I have many, most of them irrational, and my life would be for the better were it not filled with my constant feelings of dread. Though I know to say it is a long shot would be a massive understatement, I also hope that one day I will live in a world where it is safe to be yourself. Mindless persecution of others is horrifying, and I pray that more people will eventually realize that.
