SAU Honors College

The SAU Honors College was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU. Dr. Lynne Belcher served as founding director and is retired from SAU. The Honors College seeks and admits qualified students who seek to pursue a serious academic program with equally gifted peers and committed teachers. Honors classes are small and provide academically enriching opportunities for students and the faculty who teach them. Currently, SAU enrolls nearly 170 honors students and graduates about 66% of admitees in four years or less. Anyone interested in applying to the Honors College or seeking further information should contact the director, Dr. Edward P. Kardas at epkardas@saumag.edu or at 870 904-8897.

Brakebill, Riley: Bucket List

Ever since the film “The Bucket List” came out, many people have constructed their own bucket list, or a list of the things that they want to do before they die. My personal bucket list includes scuba diving, swimming with dolphins, and seeing the Seven Wonders of the World.

Scuba diving is a pastime that many people enjoy. I’ve been to the ocean, but I’ve never been around a coral reef and haven’t seen the ocean’s flora and fauna up close. The underwater world seems to be a polar opposite to the one on land, and that intrigues me because the world on land is the only one I’ve ever known. It would be an amazing experience to see life underwater.

Swimming with dolphins has been one of my dreams since I was very small. I’ve never seen a dolphin in real life, but I have always been fascinated by them. If I ever get the chance, I would love to go someplace where these magnificent creatures swim and interact with humans.

Traveling is also something that I’ve never really been able to do outside of school functions. I vowed to myself long ago that one day I would see the Seven Wonders of the World, and I plan on keeping that promise to myself. I think it would be a humbling experience to stand in awe of God’s and men’s creations. Both created exquisite sculptures, whether they are made of earth or iron, and one day I will see them.

I believe scuba diving, sky diving, and seeing the Seven Wonders of the World are a pretty good start to my bucket list. Everyone only gets one chance in this life, and I would like to do the most I can with the time that I’ve been given.
