SAU Honors College

The SAU Honors College was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU. Dr. Lynne Belcher served as founding director and is retired from SAU. The Honors College seeks and admits qualified students who seek to pursue a serious academic program with equally gifted peers and committed teachers. Honors classes are small and provide academically enriching opportunities for students and the faculty who teach them. Currently, SAU enrolls nearly 170 honors students and graduates about 66% of admitees in four years or less. Anyone interested in applying to the Honors College or seeking further information should contact the director, Dr. Edward P. Kardas at epkardas@saumag.edu or at 870 904-8897.

Cressman, Kim: Bucket List

Some say that life is short; however, it is the most time-consuming thing we will ever do. Humans spend hours upon hours compiling lists of tasks they want to accomplish before they die. Common wishes include skydiving; some settle for something a little more basic, such as getting married. As someone who has done quite a bit of living for 18 years, neither of these ideas appeal to me. I live with a deeper meaning.

My strongest desire is to meet Shayley Bourget, a musician to whom I can relate my issues. Not only is his singing voice angelic to me, he appears to be as close to perfect as one can be. After listening to his band, I took an uncanny interest in his personal life. His story is not particularly uncommon for musicians; I was captivated by the guitarist/vocalist nonetheless.

After dealing with depression through the use of alcohol for several years, Bourget took the initiative to begin recovery. Of course, this meant leaving his band, which causes him much grief to this day. As someone who has suffered from the effects of depression for many years, I understand how hard it is to get help. Bourget did it, and now a year later, he is playing in a new band and preparing to release his debut record.

I do not typically have role models or heroes, and I will not claim Bourget as my inspiration. I will say that it is always helpful to know that someone who has achieved so much success has struggled with the same issues I have and made his way past it all. I would give anything to shake this man’s hand and tell him I am proud of where he is today.
