SAU Honors College

The SAU Honors College was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU. Dr. Lynne Belcher served as founding director and is retired from SAU. The Honors College seeks and admits qualified students who seek to pursue a serious academic program with equally gifted peers and committed teachers. Honors classes are small and provide academically enriching opportunities for students and the faculty who teach them. Currently, SAU enrolls nearly 170 honors students and graduates about 66% of admitees in four years or less. Anyone interested in applying to the Honors College or seeking further information should contact the director, Dr. Edward P. Kardas at epkardas@saumag.edu or at 870 904-8897.

Caldwell, Justin: Bucket List

As humans grow, they gain aspirations that they hope to accomplish before we die.  For some, these dreams are accomplished, and for others, they are not.  These future goals can be grouped together and termed a bucket list, or a list of things to do before we die.

The first idea on my bucket list is what I want to do as a profession.  I hope to become a percussion director at a university.  To do so, I plan on getting a bachelor degree in music education, a master degree in music composition, and a doctorate in percussion performance.  The reasoning behind teaching in a university is that I hope to spread the joy of music to people who truly want to learn and perfect their art.

Another especially important goal on my bucket list is to become wealthy enough to support my mother.  She has been the force behind all of my success musically.  Without her inspiration and guidance, I never could have persevered through the hours of practice required to become an all-state musician.  We had several months that she wasn’t sure how the bills would be paid, but she didn’t let it hinder me in any way.  I hope to be wealthy enough to sustain her lifestyle and my own so she will never have to worry about money.

As I have grown, I have discovered my love for music.  I hope to let my musical abilities continue to improve, so that I may become a percussion director (my first goal) and spread the passion that I have for music to others.  With good musicianship comes a good paycheck, thus allowing me to attain my second goal.  With determination and hard work, I hope to become one of the lucky people whose bucket list is accomplished.
