The SAU Honors College was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU. Dr. Lynne Belcher served as founding director and is retired from SAU. The Honors College seeks and admits qualified students who seek to pursue a serious academic program with equally gifted peers and committed teachers. Honors classes are small and provide academically enriching opportunities for students and the faculty who teach them. Currently, SAU enrolls nearly 170 honors students and graduates about 66% of admitees in four years or less. Anyone interested in applying to the Honors College or seeking further information should contact the director, Dr. Edward P. Kardas at epkardas@saumag.edu or at 870 904-8897.

Bain, Maylie: Bucket List

As a child, I watched numerous television shows with my little sister.  When the commercials would come on, we would eagerly wait to see what was being advertised. If my sister or I were interested in the item, we would scream out “I want that and all that comes with it!” From the time I could fully understand what the word “want” meant, there have been numerous things that I have made my goal to obtain; however, there are three items on my bucket list that are my ultimate goals. To achieve these things would mean a great deal to me.

My lifelong dream is to become a surgeon. When I was 12 years old, my dad died. He was misdiagnosed when the doctors told him he had a sinus infection. In all actuality, his carotid artery had torn and that caused him to have a stroke. It took me a few years to comprehend that everything truly does happen for a reason, but I now know in my heart that it is true. I believe that it is my duty as a future doctor to help others and make sure that no other little girl ever has to lose her daddy like I did when I was so young.

Another goal of mine is to finish my college career as a softball player with a 4.0 GPA. My studies and my schooling mean an enormous amount to me, and I would be thrilled to someday receive All-Conference, along with All-Academic honors as a member of the SAU softball team.

Finally, I hope to someday get married and start a family. With my schooling in my journey to become a surgeon, I understand that it will be a long while before I am able to settle down, but family is something that I value and cherish. My family is extremely close and compassionate towards one another, so I want to make sure that I can someday allow my own children to experience this love.

Obviously, the goals on my bucket list mean everything to me. I have known for many years that I want all of these things to be a part of my life. Hopefully someday, all of my dreams will come true.
