SAU Honors College

The SAU Honors College was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU. Dr. Lynne Belcher served as founding director and is retired from SAU. The Honors College seeks and admits qualified students who seek to pursue a serious academic program with equally gifted peers and committed teachers. Honors classes are small and provide academically enriching opportunities for students and the faculty who teach them. Currently, SAU enrolls nearly 170 honors students and graduates about 66% of admitees in four years or less. Anyone interested in applying to the Honors College or seeking further information should contact the director, Dr. Edward P. Kardas at epkardas@saumag.edu or at 870 904-8897.

Winters, Clint: Bucket List

No one likes to think about it, but life is short. If you don't have some set goals, you'll find yourself looking back and wishing you had done more. Therein lies the beauty of the bucket list. If you're smart about it, you can do it all in life, and have crossed out all of the items on your list.

The first item on my bucket list is to see The Flaming Lips in concert before they retire. I like the band, but that's not really the reason I want to go. Their concerts are often described as “experiences” rather than just concerts. Lasers fly, the singer crowd surfs in a giant hamster ball, and a whole plethora of other crazy things happen. They also sound good live too. Of all of my bucket list items, this one is probably the most likely to happen.

The second order of business on my bucket list is to get a road, building, or even a town named after me. This one might be a little hard to accomplish while alive, but I at least want to do something important enough to get this honor after I'm six feet under.

Third on the list is to learn the guitar solo to “Viscera Eyes” by The Mars Volta. They might be the single weirdest progressive rock band ever, and it shows in their dissonant, “freakout” guitar solos. It's almost nonsensical it's so complex.

Last on the list is to kill an animal that is larger than me, preferably a bear, with a knife. I'll probably wait till everything else on the list is complete to try this one, simply because it might be the last thing I ever do. If I pulled it off, however, I would be the guy that killed a bear with a knife, and That would be awesome.
