Shakespeare wrote in Henry IV part II, "Swifter then he that gibbets on the Brewers Bucket." The wooden frame that was used to hang animals up by their feet for slaughter was referred to as a bucket, and in the spasms of death the animal would frequently “kick the bucket”. A “bucket list” is nothing more than a list of those things which a person desires to do before reaching those last spasms of death. My own personal “bucket list” is composed of those things which fill me with a fire of anticipation to see carried out, though to some my desires may seem mild and uninspiring.
Reading Tolstoy’s War and Peace is perhaps not the most potentially exciting endeavor to undertake, but as a young scholar and lover of words, I believe that reading this novel would be an accomplishment worth bragging about. Entangling myself in the lives of Russian aristocrats in the middle of a war might be one of the greatest highlights of my pending career.
Becoming the author of such a work would be an even greater source of pride. It is my greatest desire to someday publish a novel which will leave my readers amazed and while no one may ever remember my name, as long as my book is being read I will be remembered through the characters and realms I create.
My bucket list is filled with endeavors that others have accomplished that have left me amazed. Before I leave this world I desire have amazed others and leave a legacy behind me that will continue to amaze. We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever; it’s to create something that will.
