SAU Honors College

The SAU Honors College was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU. Dr. Lynne Belcher served as founding director and is retired from SAU. The Honors College seeks and admits qualified students who seek to pursue a serious academic program with equally gifted peers and committed teachers. Honors classes are small and provide academically enriching opportunities for students and the faculty who teach them. Currently, SAU enrolls nearly 170 honors students and graduates about 66% of admitees in four years or less. Anyone interested in applying to the Honors College or seeking further information should contact the director, Dr. Edward P. Kardas at epkardas@saumag.edu or at 870 904-8897.

Tan, Pui: Bucket List

“We tend to forget that happiness doesn't come as a result of getting something we don't have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.” -Frederick Keonig

Life without happiness is not a life I would want to be in. It doesn’t matter if I had a billion dollars and all the things I would ever want, it doesn’t matter if I had a billion friends. If I had no happiness and no peace, all those would be worthless. I don’t know what my future will be, but I will strive to make it a happy one. While I am still alive, these are the things I would love to accomplish.

1) Travel to all seven continents of the world with a loved one(s).

As clichéd as it may sound, traveling the world is a feat everyone should try to accomplish. I want to experience all the different cultures and ways of life. I want to gain a new perspective on life and to be enlightened by the diversity of the wealth of cultures the world has to offer. I’d rather travel with a loved one or loved ones because everything is so much better when it’s done with the person or people you love most. It altogether heightens the experience.

2) Learn as many musical instruments as I can

I have always wanted to play the drums. I intend to pick that skill up someday, but why stop there? There are so many beautiful instruments out there that I would love to play fluently. At the top of my list would be the drums, piano, guitar (both acoustic and electric), and other common instruments. I would also like to play instruments specific to particular cultures such as the Chinese Erhu, the Scottish bagpipe, and the Japanese Taiko.

3) Do all the things I wouldn’t usually do

Just for fun and for experience’s sake, I want to try extreme sports like bungee jumping, sky diving, shark diving, cliff diving, and hang gliding. I love adrenaline rushes. I do get scared to the point of feeling like giving up but once I start, adrenaline kicks in and it becomes a fun way of pushing myself out of my comfort zone and allowing myself to live life to the fullest.
