SAU Honors College

The SAU Honors College was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU. Dr. Lynne Belcher served as founding director and recently retired from SAU. The Honors College seeks and admits qualified students who seek to pursue a serious academic program with equally gifted peers and committed teachers. Honors classes are small and provide academically enriching opportunities for students and the faculty who teach them. Currently, SAU enrolls nearly 170 honors students and graduates about 66% of admitees in four years or less. Anyone interested in applying to the Honors College or seeking further information should contact the director, Dr. Edward P. Kardas at epkardas@saumag.edu or at 870 904-8897.

Bed Race 2010

The Honors Hall Bed before the race. Kendall Thomas (on left) puts on her beanie while Ben Bower and Stephanie Dawson discuss strategy. The bed won a prize for "Most Original."

The Annual SAU Bed Race was held today and the Honors College competed successfully before bowing out near the end. The Bed Race team consisted of rider Courtney Van Camp and pushers Augustus West, Ben Bower, Kendall Thomas, and Stephanie Dawson.

Propeller-headed team poses prior to competing. Front Row (L to R): Stephanie Dawson and Kendall Thomas, Back Row: Ben Bower, Courtney Van Camp, and Augustus West.

The Honors Team won several heats before being bested. They won the heat shown below when the opposing bed encroached on their lane and was disqualified.

Below is a shot of the last heat. The other bed had already cleared the frame of the shot. Next year we might hide a motor in the bed.

Of course, the bravest (foolhardiest?) member of the team was rider Courney Van Camp. Below, she poses before the race. I'm happy to report that she is still safe and sound and all in one piece.

Pizza Party

Sarah Grigg opens pizza boxes at the party (photo by Majesta Miles)

Many thanks to 3rd floor Honors North RA Sarah Grigg for hosting a pizza party for honors students on Tuesday. A large contingent (40+) descended upon the classroom and easily devoured the 10 large pizzas I had delivered from Domino's. Yes, some latecomers did not get any.

Honors student Johanna Hensley helps herself to pizza while others wait their turn. Joshua Wright (left) looks on while C. J. Heaton opens another box (photo by Majesta Miles).

Everyone briefly made a personal introduction. One of the reasons for having the party was to get honors students to better know each other. Majesta Miles shot the photos shown here.

Wesley Saling (back, standing) introduces himself while Chris Harris (front, left) eats some pizza (photo by Majesta Miles).

We'll do something similar again soon. Raw oysters anyone? Boiled crawfish? I know, it's Southern Arkansas not Southern Louisiana. Ok, maybe a taco bar or hot dog party? Let me know.

West, Augustus: Bucket List

There are many activities I wish to experience before I die. These include going scuba diving, seeing the pyramids, and going to the Bahamas. However, there are five things I wish to do more than anything else before I kick the bucket.

5. The fifth experience is to go on an African Safari. I have always wanted to witness firsthand the amazing biodiversity and geographic wonders found in Africa. I also would like to hunt for lion, cape buffalo, and leopard. I would also like to travel to Africa is to experience some of the regions diverse cultures.

4. The fourth experience on my bucket list is to visit the ruined cities and temples of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations. I have always been fascinated with the great civilizations of the Americas that developed totally apart from the rest of the world and still built pyramids and cities that were some of the largest in the world.

3. The third experience on my bucket list is to go sky diving. I have always wanted to go sky diving because it is a pure adrenaline rush.

2. The second experience on my bucket list is to make a difference in the world. I want to work in a field that will allow me to make the world a better place. I want to be a part of a major biological discovery that helps mankind for the better.

1. The experience that I want most before I die is to have a family. I want to meet a great woman who will love me and with whom I can have and raise at least two kids. I want to have a career that can support my family and live to see my kids grow up and have children of their own.

These five experiences will give my life meaning if I can accomplish them before I kick the bucket.

Honors College Report September 15, 2010

New Students:
The SAU Honors College enrolled 53 first-year students in Fall 2010, a record (up from 32 last year). Of those students, 4 were sophomores and 1 was a junior transfer. The majority (32) of the new students are from Arkansas. But we also enrolled one student each from Minnesota, California, Florida, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. The rest came from Texas and from overseas. New international students hail from Tibet, Bulgaria, Malaysia, Korea, Kenya, and Nigeria. The total enrollment of the Honors College now stands at 112, also a record. The Honors College hopes to reach a stable enrollment of 150 students in the near future.

Fund Raising:
The Honors College received a $1000 grant from the Magnolia Walmart to purchase A/V equipment for its new, interim office. The Ivan Smith Furniture Company donated two leather easy chairs and a coffee table for the office as well. The value of that donation was $1500. Dale Dunn on behalf of the Farmer's Group insurance donated funds to purchase drinks and snacks for Moving Day. Dr. David Peppers of Mena donated funds to defray expenses for a Honors Council dinner following the Matriculation ceremony. Both men are members of the SAU Honors Council.

New Equipment:
Thanks to SAU funding, the Honors North Computer Lab now houses 12 new virtualized PC workstations with large flat screen monitors.

Trips:
Recently, 22 honors students visited the Museum District in Ft. Worth. They took in the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, the Kimbell Art Museum, and the Ft. Worth Science Museum, where they watched an IMAX movie on the state of the world's oceans.

Visitors:
The Honors College hosted Arkansas Supreme Court Justice Jim Gunter as the speaker at its annual Matriculation Ceremony. Justice Gunter challenged honors students to accept the responsibilities inherent in an honors education. He said, "To those who much is given, much is expected." Afterward, the judge offered to host a visit by Honors College students to Little Rock.

Other Events:
Moving Day was a success thanks to the loan of a makeshift ramp by local business Southern Aluminum. About 20 honors students enjoyed a barbecue and swim party at the Magnolia Country Club. That event was catered by local business Mule's Cantina.

Future Plans:
The Honors College is developing a budget to take a large number of students to Little Rock for three days and two nights (March 31 to April 2). To present papers and attend sessions at the Southern Regional Honors Council meeting. Much of that money will have to come from donations and fund raisers. Dr. Kardas and Ms. Wilson will travel to Kansas City in October to present their poster on non-cognitive predictors of academic success in Honors College. Their results showed that two factors: a history of social support at home and the ability to stay on task significantly predicted first semester academic success.

Ban, Pujan: Bucket List

Like many people, I have a bucket list of stuff that I want to do in my life. Here are some of the personal achievements that I want to attempt before I die.

  • 1. To become a successful engineer
  • Since childhood, I have been deeply interested in scientific topics; they attract me. During my high school days, I actively participated in science activities including quizzes, experiments, and exhibitions.

  • 2. Learn to play guitar
  • Everyone loves music and I’m no exception. But mostly I love playing guitar. I have always wanted to learn to play the guitar but because of studying I had no time for it.

  • 3. Open an orphanage rehabilitation center
  • Back in Nepal, many children are parentless. Their life is so miserable that they don’t even have a proper house to live in or food to eat. Few care about such children. So, I want to create an environment for them which will make their life easier and more meaningful.

  • 4. Make a tour of The United States
  • Before I die, I want to tour parts of United States. I want to visit and watch the Geysers at Yellowstone National Park, explore the Carlsbad Caverns, and tour the Boston Harbor, Brooklyn Bridge, The Liberty Tower, and Liberty Bell. I want to experience all the natural and man-made wonders of the United States and to remember them always as a part of my life’s happy memories.

  • 5. Experience bungee jumping
  • Watching others bungee jump is fun. I want to share that fun too. I want to experience the thrill, fear, excitement; one can get from this sport.

New Computers Installed Today

The 12 new virtualized PCs installed September 14, 2010.

Our new computers were installed today. They are virtualized PCs (four stations for each PC) and sport large flat screen monitors. Pass your thanks along to Chris Harris, he got this ball rolling. Also, tip your hat to the SAU Administration; they footed the bill.

These puppies are fast too:

For comparison's sake, here is a picture of the old lab PCs:

Wu, Xi: Bucket List

Hans Christian Andersen said, “Just living is not enough. One must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.” I, as a junior student at SAU Honors College and Chemistry major, made my bucket list. Here it is.

  1. 1. Become a U.S. Navy officer. Someone once said that the sea seems calm, but not inside of it. Nature gives the sea a lot of beautiful properties and also makes it so mysterious. The sea can always calm us while at some time keep us thinking more deeply. Also, I like sunshine and water. For a science major, The U.S. Navy is a good place to carry out interesting research projects.
  2. 2. Become a research professor. My dad is a professor. I have wanted to become a professor since I was a kid. Professors may not make lots of money like Bill Gates, but they possess something invaluable, the freedom to pursue their own interests. No matter whether I end up as a civilian or as a military officer, my career will be research oriented and it will be a big part of my life.
  3. 3. Play the piano well. Science, music, art and literature are all connected. Many famous scientists are also accomplished artists, musicians and writers. Those humanistic subjects can inspire scientists. I have never played any instruments and I am a poor singer, but last semester I accidentally discovered that I can play the piano well and I been playing ever since.
  4. 4. Own a Goldendoodle. A goldendoodle is a hybrid cross between Golden Retriever and Poodle. They are very cute dogs and make great companions.
  5. 5. Sprout a pair of wings. God did create the atoms or even the essential particles. However, He did not limit our ability to re-order nature. As genetic technology develops, I believe that one day I grow real wings on my back, as in the movie “X-man”, and I can fly not in a metal box but with my own wings flying in the nature, with the nature and touching the nature.

Wynn, Alex: Bucket List

There are several things that people dream of doing before they pass on to the next life. These mortal aspirations are commonly known as a bucket list. Some people dream of meeting special people or traveling to exotic places. My personal bucket list is comprised of some very physical activities.

The first thing that I plan on doing before it’s too late is to go skydiving. I want to experience the rush of wind beating on my body from all directions as I plummet from thousands of feet towards the earth. I want to view all of the tiny objects that seem so big from the ground. This is also a very practical thing to put on one’s bucket list since there is such a good chance of dying in the process.

My father and I are very big hunters and fishermen. We love to be outdoors testing our skills. Because of that, the next item on my bucket list is to go hunting with my father at a place where you are guaranteed to bag a trophy buck with my father. I can hardly imagine the rush of adrenaline we will experience when we see twelve antlers cross our path. Our competitiveness will be pushed to a new level if we were we put in a situation where we were surrounded with massive, trophy deer.

The biggest aspiration I have to be before I die is to become president of the United States. I’m a political science major and enjoy politics very much. So, I’m taking the first steps on the necessary path, but still I have a long way to go.

Willis, Rob: Bucket List

As I begin to consider what my “bucket list” should contain, I am, as a natural consequence, forced to consider all the things that I have done in my 25 years of life. I am still a young man, relatively speaking, but I have experienced more than most my age. I have already traveled the world and made friends and enemies at home and overseas. I fought a war abroad to further our nation's foreign policy and a war at home to protect our streets.

As portrayed in the film, a “bucket list” is a return to youthful exuberance at the end of one's life. When faced with imminent death, both men allowed themselves to live as they would have had they not fallen prey to the lock-step drumbeat of our culture. How much more could they have accomplished had they simply forgone the notion of monetized value and instead immersed themselves in the aesthetic pleasures of life?

After living as a foreigner in foreign land, I returned home only to find myself a foreigner in my own land. Within the space of a year, I had languished in oppressive desert heat and enjoyed Cuban cigars at pub in Guatemala; I watched twelve feet of snow fall in Buffalo, and sat for five hours in traffic in Washington D.C. People in our society are raised from birth to ignore the pleasures of everyday life. They are indoctrinated into a materialistic ethos where status is determined by property. All things, including knowledge, are assigned a material rather than intrinsic value.

So what are the contents of my “bucket list?” In no particular order of value they are simply:

  • Find intrinsic value in all things, no matter how small.
  • Discover the true wealth of knowledge, not the monetized value of possessions.
  • To never be trapped by the illusion that we are somehow greater than those who came before.
  • Be at peace, that I am not limited by pride, intolerance, or greed.
  • To paraphrase Socrates, learn to know that I know nothing.

Hultberg, Joshua: Bucket List

Almost every person on this earth has some sort of list of desires to accomplish before their inevitable demise. Songs and movies have been written about how people try to cram their lives into their dying days. Until now, I have never pondered my death so I wouldn’t know.

My “Bucket List” is really only a “Bucket Item;” I want to open my own custom auto shop one day. I have loved cars and trucks my entire life. My first toy was a Matchbox car. Since then I had collected over 1,000 Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars, each of which I knew individually. I collected them and played with them. I set up miniature cities and roads with traffic grids and passing lanes. I learned all I could about cars and how they worked.

At the age of seven I purchased a 1972 Volkswagen Super Beetle. It was “sunshine yellow” with flecks of rust shining through the front. Amazon had just hit it big as a website and my $20 in “Christmas Stock” I had invested soared to over $1200 over a week, and that’s how I bought my car. I learned out to drive on the little dirt drive we lived on; after some practice, I was pretty good at it too.

We eventually sold the bug but not my love for cars. Over the past 10 years I’ve drawn many concepts of custom vehicles that I would love to build and design.

Now I’m 18 and my “Bucket List” is to build my own custom ride and use that to jumpstart my own shop. I want to do something I love before I die and that is about it. I’m not concerned about skydiving or anything extreme, just my work and my passion.

Cooley, Kiefer: Bucket List

Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson are perhaps the two greatest actors of all time. Morgan and Jack co-starred in the 2007 film “Kick the Bucket.” This movie was such a success, not only as entertainment, as inspiration to live our lives to the fullest by creating our own personal “bucket list.”

When creating my own bucket list, the first thing that came to my mind was base jumping. An extreme sport, base jumping gives you an insane rush of panic and fear that gives you the sense of being alive. That feeling is what a bucket list is all about.

Next on the list would be to race in a NASCAR race, but drive the car around the track BACKWARDS. Anyone would love to simply race in a traditional manner, but I’m on a bucket list, and that means extreme. Driving backwards facing 50 odd cars racing toward you at any given second should be enough to satisfy even the most extreme adrenaline junkies.

After all this excitement, I’d take a break. Nothing says peace and tranquility like a dive to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. Underwater is a different world; it is quiet, somber, and almost sorrowful. It is the perfect activity for those seeking relaxation on all levels.

The fourth item on my list, is pursuing the fad of “riding a bike with no handlebars.” According to a popular rap group, The Flobots, they can “ride a bike with no handlebars.” I don’t know about you, but this practice seems absurd, and I would dearly love to investigate it. Maybe this is just one of those fads people buy into without question.

The last and most important item, for me at least, is for the last check I write to bounce. Money is so materialistic; you cannot spend it once you’re gone, so why not spend it all while you can. And that is exactly what I intend to do.

So as you may see, bucket lists vary widely. Why should they list the same set of dreams and goals?

Gordon, Chelsie: Bucket List

Shakespeare wrote in Henry IV part II, "Swifter then he that gibbets on the Brewers Bucket." The wooden frame that was used to hang animals up by their feet for slaughter was referred to as a bucket, and in the spasms of death the animal would frequently “kick the bucket”. A “bucket list” is nothing more than a list of those things which a person desires to do before reaching those last spasms of death. My own personal “bucket list” is composed of those things which fill me with a fire of anticipation to see carried out, though to some my desires may seem mild and uninspiring.

Reading Tolstoy’s War and Peace is perhaps not the most potentially exciting endeavor to undertake, but as a young scholar and lover of words, I believe that reading this novel would be an accomplishment worth bragging about. Entangling myself in the lives of Russian aristocrats in the middle of a war might be one of the greatest highlights of my pending career.

Becoming the author of such a work would be an even greater source of pride. It is my greatest desire to someday publish a novel which will leave my readers amazed and while no one may ever remember my name, as long as my book is being read I will be remembered through the characters and realms I create.

My bucket list is filled with endeavors that others have accomplished that have left me amazed. Before I leave this world I desire have amazed others and leave a legacy behind me that will continue to amaze. We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever; it’s to create something that will.

Ft. Worth Trip Report and Pictures

Here, our group poses in front of Joan Miro's Woman Addressing the Public statue which stands in front of the Kimbell Art Museum.

I'm still recovering from the drive back and forth, but we had a great time in Ft. Worth yesterday. We began at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. We saw a special exhibit of Ansel Adams photos there including Moonrise Over Hernandez New Mexico.

Also at the Amon Carter were many pieces by Fredrick Remington and Georgia O'Keefe. Here are a couple of Remingtons:

Remington Sculpture: Trooper of the Plains

Remington Painting (detail): Cavalryman's Breakfast on the Plains

We ate a nice lunch at Z's Cafe nearby. Here are some scenes from our repast.

Walmart $1000 Grant

Above is a picture of the (symbolic) check the Honors College received today as a grant from the local Walmart Store. The real check has been deposited with the SAU Foundation and will be available for use soon. The Honors College will use the money to purchase A/V equipment for the Honors Office for recruitment and for student use.

Our special thanks go out to Christy Melton, Personnel Director and to Drew Schaeffer, Store Manager for their generosity.

Be sure and check out the renovated Walmart. One way to measure how well any small town is prospering is to count the old Walmarts. Magnolia is on its third Walmart and now that one has been renovated, so that should also count for something.

Rai, Navendra: Bucket List

My name is Navendra Rai. I am from Nepal. I completed junior high school at the Eureka Residential School, Dharan and senior high school in the science faculty from Xavier International College, Kathmandu. In this essay, I am describing some of the things I want to do before I die.

First, I want to compete in the WCG. WCG stands for the World Cyber Games. It is like the World Cup of cyber games and is one of my dreams. But, I don’t expect to win it. I like to play computer games like Counter Strike and DOTA. They are the best games that I have played so far.

Second, I want to visit the South East Asian countries, especially Indonesia. I have many chat friends from Indonesia. So it would be great to meet them in person.

Third, I want to go to the Moon and watch the Earth rise and set over the lunar horizon. When I was young I used to wonder why do only the Sun and the Moon rise and set? But when I found out that to an observer on the Moon, the Earth also rises and sets, I wanted to see it.

Fourth, would be to work with the band Metallica. I am fan of Metallica. Their music is so good. I would like to work with them although I am not that good in playing music. I admire them, their music, their concerts and I would love to be a part of that band.

These are the things I wanted to do before I die. It includes participating in WCG, visiting Indonesia, going to the Moon and working with Metallica.

Green, Tamara: Bucket List

Everyone has those few things that they want to do before they pass away, or “kick the bucket.” Some lists are long and others are short. Some are easy to obtain while are difficult. My “Bucket List” has three things on it: to become a well-paid trainer for the NBA or NFL, to get married and start a family of my own, and to travel the world.

My dream is to become a well-paid trainer for the NBA or NFL. I have no preference as to which team I would like to train. I plan to achieve this by starting out as a high school or college athletic trainer and move my way up to a professional league.

The second thing I would like to achieve is to get married and start my own family. I’m like any other girl who dreams white picket fences, dogs, and the big house and family. I’m not looking to get married right out of college. I plan to establish my career first and to become financially stable enough to provide for a family.

Finally, I would like to travel the world. Because my parents are in the Navy, I have traveled a lot already. I’ve lived in Memphis, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Chicago, and Virginia Beach. I’ve always enjoyed traveling, but I have never been outside of the United States. I plan on visiting the big cities as well as smaller, poverty stricken towns across the globe. I plan on taking amazing pictures of the breath-taking views and interesting people I meet along the way.

Pinson, Zachary: Bucket List

There are very few things that I would like to do before I die and all of them revolve around me. I don’t want to save the world or anything. I just want to make myself happy.

The first thing that I would like to do before I die is to rebuild my dream car, a 1970 Ford Mustang Mach One. [Like this one?-Dr. Ed] I have waited since I was eight years old for the day that I can rebuild one of my own and drive it up and down the street in front of everybody.

Another thing I want to do before I die is live in Italy. For some reason I have this fascination with Italy and the thought of living in Sicily or Rome intrigues me. An added bonus would be to see the Pope and get the chance to wear his pointy, ceremonial hat.

Since I started learning the guitar, it has been my dream to play well enough to perform a solo on stage. My skills will eventually be as legendary as Eddie Van Halen’s, Jimmie Hendrix’s, Synyster Gates’, and Jimmy Page’s. Or maybe not. Who knows?

After “Iron Man” came out, I began to wonder why doesn’t everyone own one of these robotic suits to fly around and use as we see fit. Because my major, engineering, happens to give me the skills necessary to make this possible, I have decided that I will create my own working exo-suit to show off like Tony Stark.

I doubt that I will ever accomplish all of these things. I do know that I will at least try my best to finish my bucket list and there are a few items that might not be that hard. Either way as long as I finish the first one my life will be complete.

Steak Dinner 2010

Local businesses donate their time cooking steaks for hungry freshmen and fill the early evening sky with the smell of sizzling meat.

Joshua Hultberg (L) listens intently. In the background James Stone leans in. Meanwhile, Augustus West shares a conversation with Leigan Bower. In the foreground, Aerriel Collins eyes the camera.

Augustus West makes a point as he tries to convince freshmen to vote for him.

Hayden Kopplin addresses the crowd asking for votes in his run for the Freshman Senate.

A large contingent of honors students stop what they're doing and look at the camera. Clockwise from left are Leigan Bower, Augustus West, Zachary Pinson, Keifer Cooley, Courtney Van Camp, somebody wearing a hat (help, Lilli Hollensworth?), Michaela Dison, Sarah Person, Laura Mosely, and Kody Kasper.

International students (clockwise from L) Navendra Rai, Pui Tan, Gloria Lee, and Evgeniya Miloshova pose and pause before digging into their steaks.

The annual freshman steak dinner took place tonight at the Rider Rink and Honors College was well represented. Alex Wynn gave a mini stemwinder but held the crowd in his hands. I've already signed on as his campaign manager after he graduates :-)

Kopplin, Hayden: Bucket List

Life is short. The shortness of life prompted me to consider what exactly I had already achieved in my lifetime and what else still remained on my life’s agenda. I would like my last moments to be filled with visions and memories of a life filled with love, adventure, and meaningful experiences, a double feature blockbuster movie. I offer up my bucket list containing my grandest ambitions and silliest requests.

The ancient Olympic games were revived in the 19th century. The Olympics are held in the highest regard. For me, attending such an event would be unforgettable and add a new dimension to my life’s “movie.”

My aunt and mother have been my greatest supporters over the past 18 years; to give them back a fraction of the time, money, joy and love they’ve shown me would be the least I could do for them. I fell off the metaphorical horse several times, had it not been for them I may have never gotten back on and rode along!

The top item on my bucket list is too cliché. It is to fall madly, hopelessly and completely in love. No epic story has ever been told without the “grand love element.” When my final credits roll, I want my true love’s name to shine the brightest and lead the list.

Theatre and political activism are my only real passions in life. Ideally, I would write, direct, produce and act in my own productions that address all of the current civil rights issues plaguing our nation today. My shows would touch the lives of millions who are halted by the barriers that confront all minority groups.

The last item on my bucket list is entirely too selfish. I want to take a scuba diving expedition to the Great Barrier Reef. Australia has always been my ideal vacation spot; clear oceans, beautiful and vibrant coral, and sea life unlike anything I could ever imagined. It would be the perfect final reel to my life’s story.

Ruminer, Kelsey: Bucket List

There are many things I would like to do before I die. My top five things would be to see the Northern Lights, experience weightlessness, go scuba diving, visit all seven continents, and raise a family.

The Northern Lights are unique and beautiful phenomena seen in the night sky in the polar regions. Their main energy source is the plasma-rich solar winds that soar past earth. When the winds blow through the magnetosphere they conduct electricity and that creates the colors that can be seen from the ground.

Another thing that I would like to do would be to experience weightlessness. This one might be a little bit harder because spaceships haven’t started carrying passengers yet. There are some machines that can give you the opportunity to flip, spin, turn, and fly all at your own free-will, but the starting price is around 5,000 dollars, so I’ll wait a few years for that one.

I’ve seen the ocean several times, but I’ve never had the opportunity to scuba dive. I would like to go deep-sea scuba diving and to be able to spend hours underwater without needing to come up for a single breath.

I would say I want to see the “world” but that is basically impossible, so I would like at least to set foot on each of the seven continents. I’d like to be able to stay a few nights, enjoy some of the different kinds of cultures, take tours, and shoot many, many, photos to help remember my trips.

My last thing and final thing that I hope to accomplish in life is to make and raise a family. I say final thing, because I’m not at all interested in that right now. I hope to stay in love with my current boyfriend, and I know he’s supportive enough to help me do all the things I want to do before we settle down, but one day—many years from now—we may raise kids the way my mom raised me in a loving and very supportive home.

Hollensworth, Lilli: Bucket List

To me, a bucket list means something to look forward to in life as well as something that gives life purpose. First on my personal bucket list is to travel to a different country. I’ve spent my entire life in the United States and I believe there’s a lot more culture out there to see and that doing so would be enriching. Also, I want to run a marathon or a half marathon. I love to run and preparing for a long race would give me goal to shoot for. After, I would feel very accomplished having reached that goal. In addition, I want to do something that involves heights. This could include climbing a mountain, as in the type of climbing that involves cables and backpacks, or cliff diving, or even going on a zip line across a forest. Doing so would not only be a thrill, but would also be a great story I could tell and be proud of. Next on my list, I would like to design and build my own house. This is important to me because it’s something to which I could add my own style to and be a place that I would really enjoy. Last on my bucket list, I want to live in a large city such as Dallas. I believe that living in the city would be an opportunity to learn much, make me more independent, and be really fun. There are probably a lot of people out there who never complete their personal bucket lists. I’m hoping to not be one of these people, and I think that once completed, my bucket list will add a lot more meaning to my life.

Carnes, Heather: Bucket List

A trip with the Feed the Children Foundation is number one on my bucket list! I feel that this organization is full of courageous volunteers and I would love to be one of them. If only I could help one child get a meal, an education, a home, medical attention, or even just a pair of shoes I would be on top of the world.

Second on my bucket list is a healthcare trip to Peru. I have always wanted to travel out of the United State to do so while helping others would be amazing. In Peru the medical expenses are often too much for families to afford. Donating my time and nursing ability after college would be very fulfilling to me.

One of my childhood dreams and third on my bucket list is to carry the American flag in the Grand Entry and National Anthem of the National Finals Rodeo. Very few people can say they have held this highest honor in rodeo. The closest I have ever come is to carry the flag at our local county fair.

Fourth on my bucket list is to enter and place high in a wild horse race. These events are nearly always only held at rodeos at private ranches. Three competitors team up, usually only men, and attempt to saddle and ride a wild horse to the end of the arena before the other nine teams. Female riders rarely compete in these events; females winning is rarer still.

The Suicide Race is a very controversial matter between its competitors and the Humane Society. In this race, horse and rider run at a full gallop down a mountain, swim the length of a football field, and race into the arena. Some say it is too dangerous and a hazard to livestock and riders. But, with the proper training and conditioning, I would love to make this adrenaline rush event number five on my bucket list.

Winters, Clint: Bucket List

No one likes to think about it, but life is short. If you don't have some set goals, you'll find yourself looking back and wishing you had done more. Therein lies the beauty of the bucket list. If you're smart about it, you can do it all in life, and have crossed out all of the items on your list.

The first item on my bucket list is to see The Flaming Lips in concert before they retire. I like the band, but that's not really the reason I want to go. Their concerts are often described as “experiences” rather than just concerts. Lasers fly, the singer crowd surfs in a giant hamster ball, and a whole plethora of other crazy things happen. They also sound good live too. Of all of my bucket list items, this one is probably the most likely to happen.

The second order of business on my bucket list is to get a road, building, or even a town named after me. This one might be a little hard to accomplish while alive, but I at least want to do something important enough to get this honor after I'm six feet under.

Third on the list is to learn the guitar solo to “Viscera Eyes” by The Mars Volta. They might be the single weirdest progressive rock band ever, and it shows in their dissonant, “freakout” guitar solos. It's almost nonsensical it's so complex.

Last on the list is to kill an animal that is larger than me, preferably a bear, with a knife. I'll probably wait till everything else on the list is complete to try this one, simply because it might be the last thing I ever do. If I pulled it off, however, I would be the guy that killed a bear with a knife, and That would be awesome.

Long, Alyssa: Bucket List

A bucket list is a list of the things I would like to experience or accomplish before I die. Mine contains a variety of items, and the top item on my bucket list would be to see the ocean. I have never been to the beach, never felt the sea spray on my face, nor seen the sun set under a watery horizon. It would be lovely to watch as fish swam by and seaweed and grasses floated around me in the briny water. Standing beside the ocean on the soft sand, I would truly feel amazed at the wonder and beauty God had created.

Another event on my bucket list is to go to an opera. I love music; I like to listen to it when I read. I also am an instrumentalist and singer. So opera would combine all the aspects of music that I enjoy; from the orchestra playing complicated sheet music to the characters on stage singing story lines at unbelievably high notes. I would be completely enraptured by the story unveiled through the complex melodies and drama.

My bucket list also contains a wish to speak a language other than English fluently. I took French and Spanish at Magnolia High School and greatly enjoyed both romance languages. I would benefit immensely from mastering a language besides my native tongue because I could then communicate with a wider variety of people and learn about cultures different from mine. Speaking another language fluently would allow me to make new friends and learn from their experiences.

I am terrified of anything that crawls such as insects or bugs with hard shells that crunch sickeningly. Therefore the last thing on my list would be not to scream when I kill or rescue one of the above creatures. If I were able to save or demolish creepy, crawling creatures, I would forever be free of my paralyzing fear. My bucket list is now complete; it contains places and events I would like to experience and challenges I would love to master.

Ajigbotafe, Olawale: Bucket List

Having to create a bucket list, I pictured myself in an ambulance being rushed to the hospital after a near fatal accident, what came to my mind were the things that I would love to do but have not done yet. The first thing that came to mind was to make Africa a place that’s worth living in. It makes me sick every single day when I think of what the governments in Africa are doing to the masses. I want to be the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria because I want to improve and ensure that the standard of living in Nigeria improves before I kick the bucket.

The other things I want to do are to be a successful multimillionaire just like Bill Gates or Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the business mogul from Nigeria. I want to be a successful business man like them but I’d use my money to help the needy, the poor homeless children, and those who aspire to go to school but who do not have the opportunity. I also want to go to Mount Everest but do not want to climb the mountain alone, I want to go to the mountain with my lovely wife, climb to the top of the mountain, and probably jump right down to the bottom of the mountain. I’d rather not end my life there, because I also wish to be anchoring the Grammy Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles giving awards to contemporary artists such as Usher, Timberland, 50cent, Mary J Blige and also to other artists who have been around such as R. Kelly, Boys II men and so many others.

In conclusion, I will love to be a successful man in business, love, adventure and leadership before I kick the bucket.

Gurung, Anu: Bucket List

A bucket list, it always sounds interesting when it’s someone else's. It makes us curious to read it as quickly as possible. When the time comes to make a personal bucket list, it is difficult to bring your thoughts together. After a lot of brainstorming, here is my list of things I wish to accomplish.

I want to open an orphanage for the street children in Nepal. They do not have anyone who would love them, feed them, give them shelter or educate them. Whenever I look at them, I feel an urge to help them out of their suffering. I want to hold their hands and lead them to a safer future.

Mountaineers from all over the world go to Nepal to scale Mount Everest. Being a Nepali, I have thought about climbing it too. But never thought it likely. I want to scale Mt. Everest and look down to see how it feels to be on top of world.

I want to spend a long holiday in Greece. The beautiful pictures I have seen and the long history of this place makes it more enticing every time I think about it. I want to walk every alley and round every corner there.

I wish to complete my novel as soon as possible. I have started writing it many time but never finished it; either I lose interest in my characters or misplace my rough notes. This time I want to finish my novel without losing my focus.

I want to go for a world tour on a motorcycle. I want to reach every corner of the world on my own. I want to know what life is like beyond my comfort zone, my family and friends and my present life.

These are the top five things on my bucket list. I wish to accomplish all of them.

Van Camp, Courtney: Bucket List

Everyone has dreams that they want to fulfill before they pass, dreams never acted upon. Those dreams create the “bucket list”, that imaginary sheet of paper listing everything a person wants to do before passing. I am no different from anyone else. I have a list of things that I want to do before I die.

The first thing on my bucket list is to find my true love. I am a hopeless romantic and the idea of finally finding that one right person sends me into a mad frenzy. I want to show that man all of the affection that I can give and turn myself over to him completely. I rate this wish as my top priority in life because the love of another can make the recipient feel so complete.

Next, I want to travel to travel to at least one country on every continent. I believe it would be stimulating to experience other cultures and the diversity found in foreign lands. To try all of the different foods and to meet new people would be the opportunity of a lifetime.

Last, I would like to snorkel. Floating over the Great Barrier Reef would be amazing thing during the Australian summer. The Great Barrier Reef is home to so many diverse and mysterious forms of life that to snorkel there would be the ultimate adventure.

Bucket lists are a way for people to sort out their goals in life and to figure out what they want to do before they die. My bucket list shows the things that I want to accomplish during my lifetime. I may not be able to finish it all before I die, but I can at least hope that I can live my life to the fullest and accomplish the most important things on my list.
