SAU Honors College

The SAU Honors College was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU. Dr. Lynne Belcher served as founding director and is retired from SAU. The Honors College seeks and admits qualified students who seek to pursue a serious academic program with equally gifted peers and committed teachers. Honors classes are small and provide academically enriching opportunities for students and the faculty who teach them. Currently, SAU enrolls nearly 170 honors students and graduates about 66% of admitees in four years or less. Anyone interested in applying to the Honors College or seeking further information should contact the director, Dr. Edward P. Kardas at epkardas@saumag.edu or at 870 904-8897.

Bucket List Charles Cansler

As a student at the SAU Honors College, there are academic feats I wish to accomplish during my time at Southern Arkansas University. I plan to keep my GPA as close to 3.8 as possible, my engineering classes willing. I would also like to earn at least 100 hours of volunteer work throughout my tenure. As an honors student, I believe it is natural that I should help on campus and in our community. Regarding a Mechanical Engineering major, I want to have at least one internship. Having an internship would add more to my resume; also providing a look into the potential environment I would be working in.

Outside of what I want to achieve at school, I wish to accomplish a few of my traveling goals. To go back to the Philippines, especially for an extended period, would be wonderful. The brief time I visited my mother’s birthplace was great; I would love to catch up with that side of the family after so long. I have also thought about visiting Germany as my friend has told me of his wonderful experiences over there. In general, I would like to familiarize myself with unfamiliar cultures to widen my world view.

As for personal goals, the idea of having a fully built project car has been an aspiration of mine for many years. There have been specific vehicles I have thought about working on, such as a Chevrolet S10 or a simple Honda Civic Si. However, I am holding off on committing to one until I have the funding and time. The most important personal goal I have at the moment is to learn my mother’s native language. It’s something I deeply regret not asking about sooner, and I wish to rectify that soon.
