SAU Honors College

The SAU Honors College was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU. Dr. Lynne Belcher served as founding director and is retired from SAU. The Honors College seeks and admits qualified students who seek to pursue a serious academic program with equally gifted peers and committed teachers. Honors classes are small and provide academically enriching opportunities for students and the faculty who teach them. Currently, SAU enrolls nearly 170 honors students and graduates about 66% of admitees in four years or less. Anyone interested in applying to the Honors College or seeking further information should contact the director, Dr. Edward P. Kardas at epkardas@saumag.edu or at 870 904-8897.

Bucket List: Carmen Lok

I was never the type of person to make a bucket list because I always assumed the things on the list had to be great feats or shocking goals. However, coming to Southern Arkansas University has made me realize that each accomplishment is important regardless of its size. Pondering over what I want to accomplish before I kick the bucket, I have finally compiled my list.

Coming from a small learning center, I did not get to experience as much as other students from public or private schools did. Therefore, my bucket list consists of attending a lot of events and activities here at SAU. I want to watch football games, volleyball games, and band marches; I also wish to participate or witness the traditions we have in SAU such as bed races, homecoming, banquets, and gatherings and do some volunteer work.

I also have goals outside of the university. Since my parents graduated from high school and immediately started working, they did not get much time to explore the world outside of work. Therefore, I aim to help them retire, then they can freely pursue the hobbies that they weren’t able to before. On a more personal note, writing has always been my passion; I have written short stories and poems, but I never persevered long enough to complete anything longer than that. Thus, my aspirations would be to write a book, an article in a newspaper, and write a movie script

I may not accomplish everything on my bucket list, but the idea of it will encourage and remind me to seize opportunities and strive for what I want. I believe knowing what I want and working towards it will bring me one step closer to achieving it.
