SAU Honors College

The SAU Honors College was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU. Dr. Lynne Belcher served as founding director and is retired from SAU. The Honors College seeks and admits qualified students who seek to pursue a serious academic program with equally gifted peers and committed teachers. Honors classes are small and provide academically enriching opportunities for students and the faculty who teach them. Currently, SAU enrolls nearly 170 honors students and graduates about 66% of admitees in four years or less. Anyone interested in applying to the Honors College or seeking further information should contact the director, Dr. Edward P. Kardas at epkardas@saumag.edu or at 870 904-8897.

Bucket List Claire Mayo

My biggest goal is to graduate with a degree in information systems and a minor in computer science. After, I would like to earn a master’s in library science which will allow me to become a Systems Librarian in an academic library such as  SAU's. I would like to become a librarian because I already have some experience, really enjoy the work, and will hopefully have a lifelong steady career.

Along the way, I would like to get married, have kids, and be able to build a home and life together. I would also like to go to Antarctica before I retire and am still young.

After I retire, I would like to visit all 50 states and go to Europe to see museums and castles. I want to spend time with my family whether it be at home or while traveling. I hope to be able to have a lake or beach house as well when I’m retired where we can spend the summers.

Although this is a bit odd for someone my age, I would like to go to fine art and car auctions not to buy but to see all the exceptional pieces.

Bucket List Jameson Foster

As a current student in the Honors College at Southern Arkansas University I plan to keep my GPA at least 3.6 because I believe, as an Honors College student, it is my duty to get the best grades I can. I am also working toward graduating with a major in Computer Science (Computer Game and Animation Design) in 2028. I chose this degree because I have been making video games since I was 10, and I enjoy the process.

In 2025, I plan to begin looking for an internship at a video game development studio so that I can meet like-minded individuals in my career field and gain hands-on experience, which will benefit my future career. I intend to continue on this path after graduating around 2028-2029; my end goal is to become a lead designer, at the very least.

I also want to spend time with my family, especially my nieces, Laykin and Blakely, and my nephew, Asher, because they are getting older, and I want to spend time with them before they become more distant, as I have become with my own aunts and uncles.

Once I begin my career, I would like to start a family around 2030–2032 because family is a great motivation for working harder and striving to advance in my career. With my family, I hope to visit New York City because, as my mother always says, “Everyone needs to visit once.” My current partner also wishes to visit NYC one day.

As for more immediate bucket list items, I plan to attend and compete in the SAU Game Jam on October 5th, as I plan to work with people in my major to create my first big game jam project.

Bucket List Eliza Taylor

As a college student, my goal is to earn an undergraduate degree in biology pre-health within three years. I’ve been committed to this objective since early high school, and I’m excited to push myself to achieve it!  After my time at Southern Arkansas University, I aspire to become a dentist and eventually an orthodontist. Since I can remember, my dream has been to work in the dental field. In kindergarten, when classmates were apprehensive about having their teeth pulled, but wanted a visit from the tooth fairy, they would come to me for reassurance. I would explain how it wasn’t painful, and they often asked me to pull their teeth because I seemed “so experienced”. Looking back, it’s amusing, but those moments ignited my initial interest in dentistry.

Another goal I aim to achieve is becoming bilingual or even trilingual. I want to learn Spanish and other languages to better connect with people from diverse cultures. Traveling the world is a priority for me, and being able to communicate with locals is a crucial part of the experience. I wish to visit Greece and Rome for pleasure, while also exploring developing countries for service opportunities.

A significant reason I want to become a dentist is to serve others. After obtaining my credentials, I plan to travel to countries such as Honduras or Haiti to use my skills to assist those in need. Dental issues are prevalent in these areas. By being fluent in their languages and equipped with the necessary skills, I believe I can make a meaningful difference in their lives. Positively impacting others while making a difference is the top item on my bucket list.

Bucket List Gabrielle Nelson

My current goal is to graduate from Southern Arkansas University with an associate’s degree in university studies (with an Honors College distinction).

After, my goal is to graduate from the University of Central Arkansas with a bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and disorders (with another Honors College distinction) and, later, a master’s degree in speech pathology.
Outside of school I want to go to Colorado with my father on an elk hunt.
I enjoy traveling and spending time with family and friends regardless of my destination. I particularly want to go to Yellowstone National Park and see the wolves and how they interact with each other without human interference.  Because most of my family heritage is German, I would like to visit our ancestral country.
When visiting my Aunt Jen, we often volunteer at the World Bird Sanctuary in Valley Park, MO. Usually, I help clean the different birds’ areas and the enclosures for the snakes, turtles, and bats. A couple of years ago I was allowed to hold an Eurasian Eagle owl, Emerson. I grew up around a another eagle, Liberty, who lives at the World Bird Sanctuary. I would love to be able to spend more time working with many of the different birds, especially birds of prey.
Closer to home, I would like to improve on my shooting and archery skills.  I want to spend more time on both my digital and paper artwork. I want to learn how to crochet amigurumi (plushies) and other crochet techniques.

Bucket List Jaylee Wilkerson

I faced a setback when I was first given the task of a bucket list. I couldn’t think of goals that I wanted to complete off the top of my head.  After debating my life’s aspirations for a while, I have finally come up with a perfect “bucket list.”

I want a consistent career that I never have to doubt, I want a home that never sees unhappiness, and I want a family that is the idea of the “American dream.”  Although these do sum up the completeness of my bucket list, I feel they are too broad. I strive to work hard and dedicate myself fully to my career and education so I can obtain a consistent career. I want to be so fruitfully awarded from my work that I am financially well enough to build a house, then I want to be physically and mentally capable enough to turn this house into a home. Once I have created this life for myself, I want to be spiritually sound enough to raise a loving, hardworking, and dedicated family. To further extend my bucket list, I want the maturity, confidence, and motivation to fight through any obstacles that stand in the way of my goals because I know these things will not come pain-free.

My Bucket list may be simple and cookie-cutter, but there is truly nothing better I could want to come of my life.

Bucket List Riley Olsen

Throughout my first year of college, I plan to make the Dean’s list and settle into life away from home.  I am currently settling on what degree I truly wish to seek; I have a list of degrees and my reasons for choosing them. That task is currently in the works and I hope to finish it by the end of my freshman year.  Then I will choose a major.

I am currently looking to establish a club here for board and card games at Southern Arkansas University, work to expand upon my collection of card games look into finding more complex and developed games, and share my interests with others who want to learn such as my love for Floriculture, the practice and science of growing flowers, and how it works to improve our world.  With my current degree plan in Agriculture Education, I intend on teaching at a high school focusing on plant scienceAfter I will return to my home state of Texas. I plan to pursue a graduate degree and either focus fully on plant science or own my nursery.

Outside of college I hope to become financially independent from my familyThen, I can build my own assets, such as my own home, car, and investmentsAt my house I plan to have livestock with cows and chickens being my primary focus.

I want to make my property self-sufficient and capable of going off-grid with water collection, solar panels, and a greenhouse.

Lastly, some of my further goals are to travel to Europe and other locations to learn more about how agriculture is practiced in different cultures and ecosystemsI plan to bring successful practices back to the United States to improve on the efficiency at my nursery and greenhouse.

Bucket List Calvin Donnelly

I want to spend more time developing myself. I find piano very interesting and often have a good time doing weightlifting at home. I want to try to use the MAC more often as they have better equipment. I recently started playing piano so I hope to one day be an expert at it.

There are a couple of things I want to start but have never gotten around to it. I would like to start reading some books about the world and how to thrive in it. I want to develop my relationship with God, and learn to be kind even when it makes me nervous to approach people.

On that note I want to learn to communicate better. I twist words and speak quickly when I am nervous, and I want to fix that. I want to be able to support all the people I care about in life, My friends, family, and those who have helped me. I have a lot of work to do, but if doing it means I can make my dreams for the future a reality count me in.
