SAU Honors College

The SAU Honors College was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU. Dr. Lynne Belcher served as founding director and is retired from SAU. The Honors College seeks and admits qualified students who seek to pursue a serious academic program with equally gifted peers and committed teachers. Honors classes are small and provide academically enriching opportunities for students and the faculty who teach them. Currently, SAU enrolls nearly 170 honors students and graduates about 66% of admitees in four years or less. Anyone interested in applying to the Honors College or seeking further information should contact the director, Dr. Edward P. Kardas at epkardas@saumag.edu or at 870 904-8897.

Wynn, Alex: President

Southern Arkansas University is a wonderful school that is run by a very well-qualified man, Dr. Rankin. I thoroughly enjoy attending the university; however, if I were to be made president of this establishment I would do my best to help improve the wellbeing of the students that it enrolls. I would go about doing this by: hiring more professors, encouraging the creation of recreational organizations on campus, and hiring a new football staff with well documented recruiting skills.

Hiring more professors at SAU it would accomplish two major things. The more teachers a college has, the more courses that are available to the student body. Some students pick a college based on the types of courses offered in hopes that those will accommodate their major. So, hiring these new professors would bring in more students to help pay them. Also hiring more professors would allow more options for student when scheduling their classes. Instead of having only one or two choices as to what time they could take their desired classes, they would have a plethora of available days and times. This will make the system of students choosing classes much more user friendly.

The vast majority of students go home every weekend for lack of things to do on campus, leaving those students who can’t go home very bored and lonely. By bringing more activities to campus, or very near campus, more students would stay over the weekend and enjoy being at the university more. A miniature golf course, go-carts, or even a paintball area would be reason enough for many students to stick around on the weekends. Discounts for being a student would accommodate the near poverty that many college students experience.

At many universities the football team is the life of the college and its students. Football more than any other sport, is what colleges can be well known for. Unfortunately for Southern Arkansas University, the current football program is absolutely pitiful. Even the students who attend games do not pay attention to the field, but talk to their friends the entire game. If I were president of SAU, I would hire an entirely new football coaching staff with star recruiters to bring in the best players in the area. This would increase school spirit and pride in the university that these students belong to.

Dr. Rankin does a wonderful job at running this university. I do not mean to undermine the things he does for this great college. I simply suggest these things as a way to increase the students experience at the school. If I were to be the president of Southern Arkansas University, these things would be on the top of my agenda for the school.
