If I were president of SAU, I would provide students more academic experiences and encourage academic diversity in addition to our current higher education curriculum.
Academic diversity is very important because people should not limit their learning to a narrow field. For example, I am a chemistry major. I took a piano course in addition to the required music appreciation course. I am a science student and I will pursue higher education and find a job in a science field. However, I do not think I should ditch art, music, and literature. I am even thinking about taking the Shakespeare course, a high level English course here. Art, music, science, and literature are the components that constitute our human society and culture. Individuals will benefit lifelong from learning those subjects. For instance, Albert Einstein was a famous physicist, but he also played the violin very well, nearly to a professional level. As a science student with about 20 years learning in science, I feel that as scientists explore every subject deeper and deeper, they will no longer be looking at the subject itself; they will reach a level where they will study philosophy and ideas. I am not quite sure how scientists will understand and learn philosophy, but I am sure they will be inspired and discover great ideas. How can we expand our scientific knowledge? Learn more and more, and more widely. I refer to that academic diversity. It is a life-long investment.
In addition to promotions academic diversity, I will also help SAU focus more on improving its high quality education. The new Science Building not only gives SAU a nice place to take courses, but also provides opportunities for additional academic experiences, like undergraduate research. It also encourages and influences other departments to start their own academic changes. SAU used to be a college which provided limited higher education, however, if we hire more professors and buy more equipment, SAU will be on its way to shifting itself to research-oriented higher education model. It will be a great change for SAU.
All in all, those are only going to happen if I were the president of SAU.
