The letter “Call for Unity” asks for African Americans to go to the courts to gain their rights. I think there is no use of going to court, because there was racial prejudice everywhere, even in the courts. Also, what is the use of making laws when they are never enforced? I am talking about the America’s most important document the “Declaration of Independence” that said, “all men are created equal.” But, Blacks were always excluded from the promises of that document. The Fourth of July is not only for Whites but also for Blacks. So, if the law that was already there it was not enforced. I do not think that enacting new laws protecting the rights of the African Americans back then would have changed anything.
I think that most of the countries have had to fight for their rights or freedom. For example, in Nepal there was dictatorship for 100 years. During that period there was a law that said no one was allowed to go against the rulers. Moreover, civilians were not allowed access to education or to protest. Hence, it was an unjust law. But, finally in 1951 or after 100 yrs there was a mass revolution. Many people lost their lives and many were injured but finally democracy was reinstituted in the country.
Freedom is a God given right. If one doesn’t have it one must fight for it. There is not anything about freedom that is untimely or unwise. As King says, just laws and unjust laws exist. I think that laws are made to sustain peace and prosperity, but if the laws itself hinders them then it must be removed at once. I also believe that “direct action” is the only way to get the attention of everybody so that people would be compelled to negotiate. However, I would say that any protest would be unwise if it is violent and causes the loss of lives. Also, it would be premature if there were very few people who support the protest. So, one should rather peacefully protest with help of adequate supporters.
