SAU Honors College

The SAU Honors College was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU. Dr. Lynne Belcher served as founding director and is retired from SAU. The Honors College seeks and admits qualified students who seek to pursue a serious academic program with equally gifted peers and committed teachers. Honors classes are small and provide academically enriching opportunities for students and the faculty who teach them. Currently, SAU enrolls nearly 170 honors students and graduates about 66% of admitees in four years or less. Anyone interested in applying to the Honors College or seeking further information should contact the director, Dr. Edward P. Kardas at epkardas@saumag.edu or at 870 904-8897.

Person, Sarah: President

There are many challenges that come with being the president of a university. However, if given the opportunity to be in the position of president of Southern Arkansas University there are several changes that I would make to the campus. These changes would be made to enhance and better the student’s experience while attending the college. If I were president there would be 3 major changes that I would implement.

One of the changes that I would make is to extend the operation hours of the HKR building so that the building could be accessed at all times. This building houses several activities. In the building are a pool, gym, workout equipment, and other things. If this building was accessible at all times students would be able to exercise or workout whenever they wanted because not all students have the time to go to the gym during the hours of operation and on the weekends the hours are shortened even more. This also might prompt more people to use the facilities because they would be able to access the equipment whenever they needed or wanted to. This would allow students that don’t have time during the day to still be able to use the equipment.

Another change that I would make is to have Java City opened 24 hours a day. By doing this students would be able to get caffeine and coffee on those late nights of studying. Students stay up to the wee hours of the night sometimes doing homework and the occasional coffee bust would help them.  This could also potentially provide more student jobs on campus because students could work the restaurant during the night hour: Not only benefitting students that are studying but also students that want on campus jobs.

Another change that I would make would be to the Rider Rink. I think that by enhancing the rink would encourage more people to go to there and, in turn, bring in more profit.  I would have the parking lot paved because right now the lot is just gravel and is not even with the road.  So it is very bumpy to get into the parking lot. I recently visited the Rider Rink and the parking lot was very badly maintained and could potentially do damage to a car.  I also think that by updating the interior of the building would allow a better experience to all who visit the rink.

All of these changes are minor and wouldn’t require a lot of money but could potentially enhance the school and the experience of students that go to school here.
