SAU Honors College

The SAU Honors College was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU. Dr. Lynne Belcher served as founding director and is retired from SAU. The Honors College seeks and admits qualified students who seek to pursue a serious academic program with equally gifted peers and committed teachers. Honors classes are small and provide academically enriching opportunities for students and the faculty who teach them. Currently, SAU enrolls nearly 170 honors students and graduates about 66% of admitees in four years or less. Anyone interested in applying to the Honors College or seeking further information should contact the director, Dr. Edward P. Kardas at epkardas@saumag.edu or at 870 904-8897.

Bucket List: Carmen Lok

I was never the type of person to make a bucket list because I always assumed the things on the list had to be great feats or shocking goals. However, coming to Southern Arkansas University has made me realize that each accomplishment is important regardless of its size. Pondering over what I want to accomplish before I kick the bucket, I have finally compiled my list.

Coming from a small learning center, I did not get to experience as much as other students from public or private schools did. Therefore, my bucket list consists of attending a lot of events and activities here at SAU. I want to watch football games, volleyball games, and band marches; I also wish to participate or witness the traditions we have in SAU such as bed races, homecoming, banquets, and gatherings and do some volunteer work.

I also have goals outside of the university. Since my parents graduated from high school and immediately started working, they did not get much time to explore the world outside of work. Therefore, I aim to help them retire, then they can freely pursue the hobbies that they weren’t able to before. On a more personal note, writing has always been my passion; I have written short stories and poems, but I never persevered long enough to complete anything longer than that. Thus, my aspirations would be to write a book, an article in a newspaper, and write a movie script

I may not accomplish everything on my bucket list, but the idea of it will encourage and remind me to seize opportunities and strive for what I want. I believe knowing what I want and working towards it will bring me one step closer to achieving it.

Bucket List: Zane Johnston

I've never been fond of making bucket lists. I understand that many find them helpful and meaningful. To me, however, they seem stifling because I tend to change my mind frequently and like to adapt to whatever comes up. So, I keep my goals vague and more along the lines of something I'm trying to do continuously rather than something that I do once and am done with. I’d rather do that than cross items off a checklist.

I want to be genuinely happy and help others be happy too. I believe my career goal of becoming a therapist would help me do this. Someday, I’d like to be financially stable enough to provide therapy pro bono to those who cannot afford it, especially children and teens. I can hardly imagine how much good that would do me, to provide for others.

I don't know if I want to have kids of my own, but hope to make a positive impact on the next generations. I don't have any lofty financial goals for myself, but I hope to live somewhere where I can keep a garden, even a very small one. I'm more concerned with making sure I'm still fighting for what I believe in, and making some sort of positive difference in people's lives.

Above all, were it me looking back at myself my hope would be that I’d admire the life I led and that I was kind to everyone.

Bucket List: Grace McLelland

Abraham Lincoln once said, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It's life in your years.” Bucket lists help fill your years with life. I want to fill in my years with academic achievements, family goals, travel goals, and business goals. My list may not seem to have much life, but it is the life I want to look back on at the end of my years.

I want my early life to include academic achievements such as graduating from SAU with 4.00 GPA as an Honors student with a Bachelor of Science degree. My next goal is to attend the University of Oklahoma Dental School, graduate from there with my D.D.S., then continue on to their graduate program in orthodontics.

At that same time, I would like to start my family goals. I want to marry a man who loves me deeply and wants to give me the world. After, I would like to have four children of our own (hopefully two girls and two boys). Later, I would like to adopt at least more two children with one being from a foreign country.

Some of my goals are travel goals. I want to see every country in Europe. Visiting all fifty states is also on my travel list. Other places I would like to go to are Japan, Malaysia, and the Phillippines.

Lastly, I have two business goals; one is to own an orthodontics practice. The other is to start a baking business when I have enough money to start one.

Bucket List: Eduardo Trejo

Bucket lists often express whether someone is “alive” or not. Although most people would fill their lists with outrageous stunts such skydiving or surfing, those are not for me. I have other options and small achievements I would want to accomplish in life.

One is to travel to another country beyond Mexico or Canada. I am talking about traveling to places like the United Kingdom, France, or Japan. I would like to learn more about these countries, explore them, and take in their beauty. I would consider earning a college degree there, or even studying for work as it took place in one of those countries, or as a vacation. I would consider that an accomplishment.

Another thing on my bucket list is to host a gaming tournament. While it may sound odd for an honors student to have such goal hosting one could be one of the neatest things to do in college or elsewhere. Hosting a gaming tournament can be one of the most fun experiences to do for a change. I have always participated in tournaments, but never ran one of my own. This accomplishment can change my perspective on video games as a whole.

Also, on my bucket list is to create an original piece of art. By that I mean a song, music video, short movie (around thirty minutes), or a research discovery made outside of a required course or assignment. This item could one that to look back on later and realize that I created something unique. Many people today look up to those who create things; I’d like to be a person they admire.

The final item on my bucket list is to graduate college. I want to make sure I have the skills and experience necessary to survive in today’s economy.

Bucket List: Hannah Henderson

Jumping and soaring through the air 14,000 feet up, is what George H.W. Bush did at 90 years old. I was crushed to find out sky-diving cost $900. My grandpa, being a successful businessman, told me to get a degree that would foster the money for all my dreams.

I started working hard in school, working 75 hours a week during the summer, and spending my second half of senior year taking care of my dying grandfather, and it was evident that Southern Arkansas University, the place where my grandfather got his bachelors, was the school for me. I could go there with no debt, and I could commemorate my grandfather in the process.

I look back to the advice my grandpa once gave me, and I still had those goals in mind. Time has passed, and I graduated with Distinguished Honors from Bryant High School in the top 7% of my class.

Although my motives have changed, they are for the better. My goal, now, is not to have a big house; I just want a house I can turn it into the type of home where my grandmother made made every guest feel welcome. I no longer want just a sky-diving experience, but I want to remember that adventure is not just for children. Thinking of these things reminds me of why I continue. Oh of course, I am going to jump out of an airplane. I just might decide to go when I am 91. This is my bucket list.

Bucket List: Tano Tatum

I am a very active and social person and enjoy playing sports, spending time with friends, and traveling. But, there are some other things that I have not yet had the chance to do. Those are attending a Chicago Bears game in Soldier Field, visiting the Bahamas, skydiving, and getting married.

I have been a Chicago Bears fan since 2017. The team’s culture, play style, and fan base fascinate me. Every time I watch a Bears home game on TV, I crave to be there. Soldier Field is amazing and the crowd is electrifying. I have even been considering moving to Chicago after I graduate just so I can go to every Bears home game.

I love vacationing at the beach so visiting the Bahamas is a place I would love to visit. In my opinion, the Bahamas have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. I will most likely honeymoon there and visit again for our tenth wedding anniversary.

Skydiving is something that nearly everyone puts on their bucket list but most don’t have the courage to do it. I would not be afraid to skydive. I believe it would be an amazing experience. Another perk of skydiving is bragging to other people that you skydived. They will respect you more for being brave enough to do it.

My final item on my bucket is to get married. This is the most important item on my list because I am tired of being single and I want to one day have a family of my own. I am so excited for this to happen. I look forward to raising my children and teaching them the ways of life.

Bucket List: Irelyn Coker

Seeing the Northern Lights, running a marathon, and learning to play an instrument are just a few of the most common items on the average person’s bucket list. While I also wish to see the Northern Lights one day, my bucket list consists of dreams that are more centered around my career and where I am to live one day.

One of my dreams is to live in New York. I have lived in a small town in the south for my entire life. My hope is that one day I will have the opportunity to move to New York City to be surrounded by all of its cultures. When there, I want to have a house just outside of the city with a personal library. To have a personal library has always been a personal goal of mine because I am such an avid reader.

The most important dream on my bucket list is to write a novel and see it published. Throughout my childhood and into my first college experiences, I read many novels that helped me through difficult times in my life. I want to be able to write a story that helps someone through life like those books helped me. I want to be alive when my novel is published because I hope that one day I will meet someone that tells me how my story impacted them.

My bucket list is full, but the aforementioned dreams are the most important to me. They are the ones that I will continue to work towards. Though I am sure I will be happy in the future if I never cross these items off of my bucket list, being able to visibly mark them off would be a dream come true.
